Humane Society of the North Bay to open Ila Emerson Memorial Catio

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 21, 2025

Vallejo, CA — The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) is proud to announce the grand opening of its newest feature: a spacious, secure outdoor “catio” designed to give shelter cats fresh air, sunshine, and a safe place to explore.  The patio for cats, known as a “catio,” will be called the Ila Emerson Memorial Catio.  The project was made possible through the generous donation of Ila Emerson’s estate. Local businesses Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber also contributed materials. HSNB’s catio was built by local builder and catio specialist Roger Sierra and his son Brooke.

Located on the grounds of HSNB’s shelter in Vallejo, the catio offers feline residents a stimulating environment where they can climb, lounge, and socialize—all while protected from outdoor hazards. The structure includes multi-level platforms, cozy hideaways, and shaded nooks, giving cats a taste of nature while they await adoption.

“This catio is more than just a play space—it’s a wellness upgrade,” said Board President Joseph Hayden of HSNB. “Cats thrive when they have access to fresh air and sensory stimulation. This addition helps reduce stress, improve behavior, and ultimately makes them more adoptable.”

HSNB will be inviting the public to view the catio and spend time with our adoptable cats.  For more information,  to donate to HSNB, or to adopt, visit HSNB.org or call 707-645-7905.  For the specific HSNB Virtual Kitten Shower Registry, please see the Amazon wish list at:  hsnb.org/amazon-kittens.  Our general Amazon wish list is: hsnb.org/amazon.
