Meet Vern, a handsome 3-year-old grey tabby weighing in at 11 pounds. This friendly, affectionate boy loves being around his people and isn’t shy about showing it.
Vern enjoys attention and bonding time, but he can become overstimulated if things get too intense. When that happens, he may give gentle “love bites” (more like a quick reminder than a real bite—he doesn’t bite down and will often follow it up with a lick). Because of this, he’d do best with an experienced cat owner who can read his cues and give him space when he needs it.
Vern would thrive as the only cat in a home without young children, where he can relax and be himself. In the right environment, he’s a loyal, loving companion with lots of personality to share.

Meet Soul with a big personality packed into his small frame. This friendly, affectionate boy is the perfect mix of playful and cuddly—equally happy rough-housing with his feline friends as he is curling up for a cozy lap nap.

With a medium energy level, he strikes a great balance between active playtime and relaxed couch potato moments.
He’s litter box trained and social with adults, respectful children (he even allowed the foster’s nieces to carry him around for a bit!), and other cats, making him a wonderful addition to a home looking for a fun, loving, and snuggly companion.

Meet Clementine!
Meet Clementine, a beautiful 7-month-old, medium-sized orange and white tabby with a warm, easygoing personality. This sweet-tempered girl is as affectionate as they come—she loves snuggling up with her people and is wonderfully gentle and tolerant with children, adults, and other cats (especially kittens and more easygoing companions).
Clementine has an especially nurturing side and has taken on a motherly role with 8-week-old foster kittens—grooming them, cuddling them, and happily playing alongside them. She’s incredibly adaptable; from day one in her foster home, she settled right in and began interacting with the resident cats as if she’d always been part of the family.
With a confident yet independent streak, Clementine strikes a lovely balance between playful curiosity and relaxed couch time. She enjoys toys and exploring, but she’s just as happy curling up beside you—or sleeping on the bed at night. Quiet, happy, and full of love, she brings a calm, comforting presence wherever she goes.
Fully litter box trained and highly social, Clementine would make a wonderful addition to a home looking for a friendly, adaptable, and deeply affectionate companion.

Meet Mischief!
Mischief is a handsome young brown tabby with white and a soft, medium-to-long coat to match his sweet personality. At just about a year old, this 9-pound charmer is the perfect mix of playful and easygoing.
True to his name, Mischief has a fun-loving side-he absolutely adores chasing feather wand toys and will happily show off his playful energy. But he also has a slightly lazy (and adorably clumsy) streak that makes him all the more endearing.
Mischief is incredibly friendly and thrives on companionship. He loves being around people and will happily keep you company throughout the day-he’s the kind of cat who just wants to be near his humans.
He can feel a bit nervous around large dogs, especially if they bark at him, so he’d do best in a home without dogs or with calm, cat-savvy pups.
If you’re looking for a sweet, social, and slightly goofy companion, Mischief might just be your perfect match.
Mischief is waiting for his forever home at our partner satellite Pet Food Express in Sonoma! Visit him during business hours!

Malina is a sweet, affectionate, and socially curious girl who truly enjoys being around people. She’ll happily greet you with a soft little meow and often settles nearby, purring contentedly just to share your company. She’s not necessarily a “lap cat,” but she could be if invited, loves to being close or being held for a while – altho having you in the same room is enough to make her happy.
She enjoys gentle petting and will let you know when she’s had enough with a soft paw touch or a light, polite nibble – just her way of communicating her boundaries. She thrives with calm respectful interaction.
Malina has playful moments, especially in the mornings and evenings. She enjoys batting toys around, chasing them, and even playing a little fetch! She prefers toys over hands and does best with slower, predictable movements, as fast or intense play can startle her – though she recovers quickly.
She is litter box trained, curious, and loves to explore. While she doesn’t seem drawn to high perches, she’s very interested in doors and vertical spaces, so a tall cat tree or climbing structure may become a favorite hangout spot!
Malina is medium-to-low energy overall and would be a wonderful companion in a calm home. She appears comfortable around gentle dogs and, even if briefly startled, tends to pause rather than run and re-engage again on her terms.
If you’re looking for a sweet, social companion who enjoys closeness (without needing constant lap time, but some attention) and communicates clearly and respectfully, Malina may be your perfect match.

This medium-sized sweetheart is a total velcro cat who wants to be wherever you are. She’s a little talker, happily chatting when she wants attention, and she absolutely loves affection. Hi! I’m Barkley and I didn’t come into the shelter looking this sleek and handsome (I was handsome – just not THIS handsome). I went straight into foster so I could get some ‘meat on my bones’ which is exactly what happened. I am now a healthy 61 pounds, love dogs and humans, and was potty trained within 2 days (I use the dog door like a champ!).
I am very food motivated (I was actually starving prior to rescue) and guard my food a bit- I’m getting better after only 3 weeks. I play really great with the other 2 dogs in the house and share toys without issue.
I am learning not to jump on everyone when I meet them (I am just so darn excited to meet you!). I have met small dogs too without issue. I did almost take out foster moms knee with my hard head when running into the house (I didn’t see her…sorry and she’s fine by the way) so a house with older kids if you have any would be better for everyone. I have a bit of separation anxiety and am learning that the humans do return – so I will settle down after making a little ruckus.
I need someone who understands I am strong and still need ongoing training support but I am a super awesome doggo – won’t you let me show you?

Well, hello! I’m Bobby! I’m a Rottweiler/Great Pyrenees mix (with a bit of Giant Schnauzer and Bernese Mountain Dog). The humans here tell me I have beautiful, loving eyes and am quite the looker! I just know…I love hanging out with people I trust AND KNOW. But I’m fearful of strangers and that fear presents as jumping and barking at strangers, so it takes time to get to know me. But once we’re friends, I’ll love you forever and be the most loyal companion. I love playing with other dogs, even ones that are smaller than me, because, let’s face it, most dogs are smaller than me! So I would love to play with another doggo pal! Due to my extra large size, I would do best in an adult-only home. I try to have good leash manners but I’m a strong boy so I need an equally strong, confident handler in case I see something fun to chase-like a squirrel! I would love for you to come meet me! And if you already have another dog, bring them to meet me to see if we will get along.

The first thing you need to know about Lincoln is this: he just wants to sunbathe while you rub his belly. That’s his love language.
Lincoln is a one-of-a-kind pup with a gigantic head and two adorably crossed eyes-we tease him about it all the time, and luckily, he doesn’t seem to mind. As long as there are treats involved, you can say whatever you want. This boy will sit, pose, and probably run for president if you’re holding a biscuit.
Lincoln walks at an alarmingly slow pace. So slow, in fact, that we lovingly call him “Eeyore on a stroll.” He takes his time, soaking in the world around him with the chill vibe of a true couch potato in training.
Despite his laid-back style, Lincoln has gathered a loyal fan base at the shelter. Everyone adores his sweet, goofy nature and calm, loving presence.
Lincoln has been with us for almost two years-through no fault of his own-and he’s more than ready to leave kennel life behind. The shelter environment has been hard on him, and he’ll need some patience and training as he transitions to a home. But we know this: Lincoln is an amazing dog. He just needs the right person to believe in him.
If you’re looking for a loyal companion who wants nothing more than belly rubs, a cozy couch, and a little sunshine, Lincoln might be your guy. He’s ready to be someone’s best friend. Could that someone be you?

Jay Aranda
Jennifer was born and raised in Southern California but has called Benicia her home since 2007. A small animal veterinarian for 20 years – including 11 years dedicated exclusively to feline medicine – she has cared for dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, and reptiles throughout her career. Her passion for animal welfare began before veterinary school at the East Bay SPCA, where she worked for several years in both adoptions and the veterinary clinic. Jennifer has practiced in and around the Benicia/Vallejo area for the past 18 years and has long admired HSNB’s mission. Married with two teenage children, she shares her home with five cats (Boshi, Rory, Bowie, Phoebe, and Harriet) and a small dog named Leo who definitely thinks he is a cat! Jennifer has previously served on Boards of Directors for the Vallejo Aquatic Club as well as the Contra Costa Veterinary Medical Association. Now that her children are older, Jennifer is excited to return to her roots in shelter work and give back to a cause that has always held a special place in her heart.
Elle Yoko Suzuki, Secretary & Treasurer
Elle was born in Japan and grew up in the Bay Area, spending 10 years in Benicia. She shares her home with two rescued dogs and two HSNB alumni cats. Elle studied Applied Mathematics with an Economics focus at UC Berkeley. As a web applications programmer and animal welfare advocate, Elle joined the board to share her technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills to support HSNB’s mission. She has served as an HOA board director and as the treasurer for a small dance company. She enjoys dancing, reading mysteries, and adventures in Japan.
Matt Kennedy
Mr. Kennedy relocated to the Bay Area from Ohio in 1991. He is a General Contractor with a focus on single family residential additions and remodeling. In his spare time, Matt goes camping, does some volunteer work, Chairs the City of Vallejo Design Review Board and goes to the gym. Matt hopes to help the HSNB get some facilities maintenance and upgrades done.
Tara Maffeo
In 2023, Tara joined the Advisory Board for HSNB where she brings her experience and expertise to support the organization’s mission to provide shelter and compassionate care to our community’s animals in need. Currently serving as Senior Vice President at Sephora, she brings a diverse background in communications, project management, learning & development, and retail operations. Tara resides in Benicia with her husband and their rescues – two dogs (one, an HSNB foster-fail!) and cat. She has always been passionate about animal rescue and began her journey with HSNB as a dog walker and supporting the management of the volunteer program. Her experience working with HSNB has given her a deep appreciation for the life-saving work that the organization does, and she looks forward to applying her skills to further the reach and success of HSNB’s critical work.
Lisa Nicole Szucs
In 2014, Lisa joined the Humane Society of the North Bay as a volunteer pet photographer. After a single afternoon of photographing adoptable cats and dogs, she was hooked. Since then, Lisa has photographed more than 800 dogs and cats for adoption—as well as a few guinea pigs, rabbits, and a pair of pet ducks. Lisa takes great pride in capturing the unique personality of each animal she is privileged to photograph. This happens by getting to know a subject before she unpacks her camera. After spending some quality kennel time (including belly rubs or ear scratches), she’s ready to raise the lens. The goal of each session is to portray adoptable animals in their best light in hopes of attracting a prospective forever person or family. As a shelter volunteer, the “paycheck” comes when adoption papers are complete and a previously unwanted animal takes the final Freedom Ride out of the shelter gate to a permanent, loving home. Lisa is proud of her past work on the HSNB Board of Directors and Animal Welfare Committee, and she is always excited to work with our outstanding staff and volunteers. She currently serves as a senior mentor on the HSNB Dog Walkers Team and contributes a weekly “Pets of the Week” column to the Benicia Herald. When not at the shelter, Lisa works in employment services and enjoys time with family and friends. She shares a home with four rescue dogs—two pit bulls, a dachshund mix, and a chihuahua—all adopted from HSNB.
